In this tide of reform, Emperor Xiaowen Tuoba Hong took the lead in setting an example by changing his multi-syllable Xianbei surname "Tuoba" into monosyllabic Chinese character "Yuan". Up and down, "Dugu" was changed to "Liu", "Gu" was changed to "Hu", "Qiu Muling" was changed to "Mu" and "Chilu" was changed to "Zan", which was passed down from generation to generation.
