Li Ling, who is studying for a PhD at MIT, is a party enthusiast. She talked about American party culture and her own party experience.

Fish: When I think of the party, what comes to mind is the scene in the movie. Boys wear suits, girls wear dresses, roses, champagne, music and dancing, all of which are elegant. I wonder if American parties are like this?
Li Ling: You're talking about a dance. It's a more formal party in America. MIT's annual prom is a typical example. It was held in the ballroom of a hotel in Boston. There are about 60 tables Boys wear tuxedos and girls wear evening dresses. Before the dance begins, we will have a big meal, then there will be a ballroom dance performance, and then everyone will chat until one or two in the morning. Very happy.
Fish: It's really wonderful for everyone to dance. Boys feel like princes, and girls can also find the feeling of being princesses.
Li Ling: Yes, but in fact, such opportunities are rare. We usually hold more holiday parties and theme parties.
Fish: Every place has different customs.
Li Ling: Another kind of parties in the United States is theme parties, such as bachelor parties and birthday parties, which are more casual.
Fish: I also want to ask, most of the parties you mentioned earlier are mainly for fun. Is there a dinner-oriented party?
Li Ling: Yes, the host often invites a group of friends to his house, or brings his own food, or the host prepares the raw materials, and everyone shows their magic, or all of them are prepared by the host. During the dinner, you can perform talents and set off the atmosphere. In summer, there are many barbecue parties. Generally, there are barbecue shops in parks that provide free facilities. Barbecue only needs meat, charcoal, spices and oil. Students in China often hold such parties.

Li Ling: We also have a holiday. The main purpose of the party is to get together, have fun and relax for a while, so that friends will not be so lonely together, which can be regarded as a compensation for the lack of warmth of overseas families.
