Ban Gu, a historian and writer in the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 32-92), divided ancient and modern figures into "nine scales" in Han Shu. The list of ancient and modern people can be divided into three categories: upper (wise), middle (middle) and lower (stupid). In each level, it is divided into three levels: upper, upper, lower, upper, middle, lower, lower, lower, middle and lower.

Some people say that people are divided into ten classes, which means that people are divided into high and low levels. In the past, some people said:

Officials; Two officials; Three monks; Four roads; Five doctors; Six workers; Seven craftsmen; Eight prostitutes; Nine Confucianism; Ten beggars.

Shang Jiuliu: "First-rate Buddha is second-rate heaven, third-rate emperor is fourth-rate official, fifth-rate pavilion is sixth-rate prime minister, and seven or eight are nine yuan."

Zhong Jiuliu: "First-rate scholar, second-rate doctor, third-rate painters, fourth-rate skins (shadow play), fifth-rate actors, sixth-rate fortune tellers (divination), seven monks, eight roads and nine chess."

"First-class stage (singing opera), second-class blowing, third-class circus, fourth-class pushing (shaving), fifth-class pool (northern bathhouse), six rubs, seven repairs and eight matches (breeding animals) and nine prostitutes".
