Golmud City belongs to Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province. Golmud City is located in the middle and west of Qinghai Province, in the hinterland of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The terrain under its jurisdiction is complex, which can be roughly divided into two parts: the basin plateau and the northern foot of Tanggula, belonging to a typical plateau continental climate. With a total area of 1 19263 square kilometers, it governs 5 streets, 2 towns and 2 townships.

"Golmud" is a Mongolian transliteration, also translated as Golumus, Golimao and Garmu, which means "a place with dense rivers". Golmud is a strategic fortress connecting Tibet, Xinjiang and Gansu in Qinghai and a transportation hub in western China, where the three trunk highways of Qinghai-Tibet, Qingxin and Dunge meet.

On 202 1 12, Golmud City was selected by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission as the ninth batch of national demonstration units for national unity and progress.

On February 2, 20021/kloc-0, Golmud was selected into the list of advanced counties (cities, districts) in the province from June to 2020, and publicized.

In February 2022, Golmud was awarded the national health town.

In 2022, Golmud City was selected as the pilot list of national youth development counties.

In May 2022, it was selected as the second batch of demonstration cities to systematically promote the construction of sponge cities.
