Extended data:
The name Zhangjiajie was first seen in the preface to Zhang's Genealogy in the fourth year of Chongzhen in Ming Dynasty (163 1). Zhang, the author of Preface, is the sixth generation grandson of Zhang Wancong, the ambassador of Yongding. During the Hongzhi period of the Ming Dynasty (1488- 1506), the court saw that Zhang Wancong had made great contributions to the town and named the area around Zhangjiajie National Forest Park "the land of mountains and forests". So Zhang Wancong went up the mountain with his family and stayed in the enterprise.
In the third year of Chongzhen in Ming Dynasty (1630), Zhang Zaihong, the sixth generation of Zhang Wancong, was appointed as an official of the League and set up a department here. This area became Zhang's hereditary territory and was called "Zhangjiajie". 1994, with the approval of the State Council, Dayong City was renamed Zhangjiajie City.
