The body color will be affected by the water quality of the living waters, ranging from silver-gray or green-brown , the flanks are lighter in color and the belly is white. There are randomly distributed black spots on the flanks, more obvious on the back half. There is a dark spot behind the gill cover and a stripe on each tail peduncle. The head is broad and flat with a split mouth. The dorsal fin has 16-20 hard spines; the dorsal fin has 7-10 soft rays; the anal fin has 9-11 hard spines; the anal fin has 8-11 soft rays; the body length can reach more than 25 cm.
It often lives in tropical and subtropical rivers, at the bottom of ponds, and likes to inhabit calm, silty water bodies. It is omnivorous and feeds on large plants, shrimps and fish fry. In the dry season, when the water level is low, it can directly absorb air with specialized organs, and can climb on the ground with its pectoral fins, showing its tenacious vitality.
