The following are the ten taboos I have summarized about raising Brazilian turtles at home.
1. Do not expose the Brazilian turtle to the sun for a long time. Although they require ultraviolet light to synthesize vitamin D3, overexposure can cause eye, carapace, and muscle lesions.
2. Don’t feed Brazilian turtles too much meat. Brazilian turtles are herbivores, and too much meat can cause indigestion and kidney problems.
3. Do not use sticky feed. Because of the structure of the Brazilian turtle's mouth and throat, they can easily get stuck in sticky feed, causing breathing difficulties and suffocation.
4. Do not use sharp tools such as kitchen knives to clean the carapace of Brazilian turtles. This can scratch the carapace and cause infection.
5. Do not let Brazilian turtles swim in water that is too low or too high. The water temperature should be between 75-82 degrees Fahrenheit, otherwise it will affect their health.
6. Do not change the food of Brazilian turtle at will. Sudden changes in diet can cause gastrointestinal upset in them.
7. Do not mix Brazilian turtles with other pets in the same cage. Brazilian turtles will attack other pets and may be attacked and injured.
8. Do not touch the Brazilian turtle frequently. Excessive touching and handling can cause them to become sick and stressed.
9. Do not let Brazilian turtles eat human food. These foods are difficult to digest and may cause gastrointestinal problems and obesity.
10. Do not leave the Brazilian turtle in a dry environment for a long time. They need water to keep their bodies hydrated and their carapace healthy.
