The significance of waste classification to social and economic development

1. Save land

The importance of a country's land resources is self-evident. It is also well known that China's per capita land, especially per capita arable land, is very small. Turning valuable land into a garbage dump is a slow suicide.

Currently, at least 40% of Beijing’s domestic waste can be recycled, which can reduce landfills by 40%. As the proportion of recyclables increases, more and more waste will be recycled. Much land has been saved from the threat of garbage.

2. Reduce pollution

Garbage classification can avoid environmental pollution caused by landfill or incineration. The garbage in modern life contains a large amount of chemical waste, such as: plastics (containing chlorine and not easy to degrade), batteries (containing mercury, cadmium or sulfuric acid), paint nutrients (containing organic solvents and heavy metals), cleaning chemicals and cosmetics (containing organic solvents, corrosive chemicals and carcinogens), etc.

It is also difficult to eliminate the possibility of leakage of toxic and harmful substances in modern landfills. Many toxic chemical wastes, methane, and methane buried in the ground are hidden dangers and fall into the landfill. Rainwater returns to the ground with harmful substances in the ground, causing major pollution incidents that have occurred in developed countries.

3. Renewable resources

There is no garbage on the earth. Garbage is a resource that humans have not processed correctly. The ecological value of this permanently eliminated resource is incalculable. Through garbage classification and recycling, people can completely turn them into resources: Good paper is made of wood. Our country currently loses 6 million tons of waste paper every year. This is equivalent to wasting 1 to 5 million acres of forest resources.

Recycling one ton of waste paper can create 800 kilograms of good paper, which can save 17 big trees; use 240 kilograms less soda ash, reduce papermaking pollution emissions by 75%, and save papermaking energy consumption by 40-50% .

Extended information:

On March 18, 2017, the General Office of the State Council released the "Implementation Plan for the Domestic Waste Classification System" formulated by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. By the end of 2020, a system of laws, regulations and standards related to waste classification will be basically established, and mandatory domestic waste classification will be implemented first in municipalities, provincial capitals, cities under separate state planning and other first batch of domestic waste classification demonstration cities.

Other first batch of domestic waste classification demonstration cities include Handan City in Hebei Province, Suzhou City in Jiangsu Province, Tongling City in Anhui Province, Yichun City in Jiangxi Province, Tai'an City in Shandong Province, Yichang City in Hubei Province, and Guangyuan City in Sichuan Province City, Deyang City, Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region, and Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province.

The plan requires that hazardous waste must be included as one of the mandatory classification categories, and mandatory classification categories such as perishable waste and recyclables can be optional.
