Mini Pufferfish (Chocolate Doll)
Translated into English as dwarf pufferfish or following its scientific name Carinotetraodon travancorius,
is the world's smallest pufferfish. (At least in the ornamental fish world.)
There are other types of pufferfish that can also be called "miniature", such as the South American pufferfish. However, the type you see above is usually referred to as a Dwarf Puffer, and the first ones I purchased in 1999 were about 1.5cm in length and did not live for more than two years, although some of them grew to 3cm in that time. about six months after I started keeping them, they began to reproduce, and at present, December 2001, I have two second generation and several third generation puffer fish. Currently, in December 2001, I have two second-generation and several third-generation mini-pufferfish.
Appearance
The shape of the body is shown on the right. The eye color can appear black, blue-green, or dark orange-red depending on the reflection of ambient light. Both eyes can be turned independently in any direction, which means that they are gurgled around. The mouth is usually half-open and pouting, though it still opens wide when they yawn. All fins except the caudal fin are constantly moving, like miniature fans, and the caudal fin opens and closes, like a fan when it opens and a tadpole's tail when it closes. The female dolphin in this picture has dark green spots on her back, but the color of the miniature dolphin's back and the spots can sometimes turn lighter.
Water conditions
When I started keeping miniature pufferfish, I didn't know what the optimal temperature and acidity was, so I kept the tank at 27 degrees, but this summer the tank temperature reached over 30 degrees at one point. I thought it was not good for the puffer fish, so I went to the internet to look for related information. I found that the descriptions of the water conditions for puffer fish on the internet are "22°C - 29°C", "about 25°C", and also "weakly alkaline - weakly acidic". There are some descriptions of water conditions for puffer fish, such as "22°C - 29°C", "about 25°C", "weakly alkaline - weakly acidic", and so on, so it seems that puffer fish is relatively adaptable to the environment.
Food
- Frozen Bloodworms
This seems to be the favorite food of the Mini Pufferfish. They will even jump up to eat it. I would feed them once or twice a day.
- Live Water Worms
I don't recommend live water worms because many people say it can bring in infectious bacteria.
I usually buy live earthworms from a reliable fish store and occasionally feed them to my mini puffer fish
about 2 times a month.
- Snails
Snails seem to be a good live feeder. Many of my friends who keep mini pufferfish use snails to feed them.
I keep some pond snails for pufferfish feed in another tank where I keep honey shrimp.
I've never seen a mini pufferfish eat snails myself, but the snails that were put in there were there for the taking, never to be found again.
- Flake feed
Mini pufferfish do not eat flake feed.
- Fins
If you keep another fish with the mini pufferfish, they will go for someone's fins when they are hungry.
How to identify male and female
Young mini pufferfish are very difficult to distinguish between male and female, but when they get big enough, sexing becomes easy, refer to the following information:
Males have longitudinal brown lines on their abdomen (from chin to tail)
Females don't have them
"Longitudinal brown line"...when a male miniature pufferfish is courting or otherwise acting aggressively, such as fighting with other pufferfish, this line turns dark brown and thickens, whereas at other times it's a lighter brown and much thinner.
Here's a picture: left: usual right: ready to fight
"The wrinkles behind the eyes"...the two male miniature pufferfish I have have these wrinkles and neither of the females do, but of course it could be that this is just an isolated phenomenon.
"Size of the female"...females grow rounder than males, especially during spawning.
Companions in the tank
In general, almost all pufferfish are meant to bite other people's fins, and even large-sized pufferfish will eat other fish. Although mini puffer fish is small, but to others' fins as usual, especially like to bite other fish and even the tail fin of the companion, that's because they that hungry, so you can put other fish and mini puffer fish in the same aquarium to keep, the premise is that, feed them in time, and never let them starve.
In my experience, Pixie Otocinclus, an algae-eating fish, can be mixed with mini pufferfish. In the beginning, the mini pufferfish would bite people's tails, but gradually, the elf learned to swim away when it realized that the mini pufferfish was approaching them, so maybe the elf really learned from its mistakes. Now, they were at peace together, or rather, just pretended the other didn't exist.
There's more detail here that I won't reproduce
