Prior to the establishment of the city, Qingyuan County was under the jurisdiction of the Beijiang Provisional Administrative Committee, Shaoguan Prefecture, and Shaoguan District.
In July 1983, Shaoguan implemented a new system of municipal management of counties, and Qingyuan and Fogang counties were transferred to the jurisdiction of Guangzhou Municipality from Shaoguan District.
The city was formally established on January 7, 1988, with the establishment of the city on October 9, 1949, in Yingde.

In 1955, Liannan Yao Autonomous County was renamed Liannan Yao Autonomous County. 1958, Lianxian, Liannan, Lianshan and Yangshan counties were merged to form Lianyang Autonomous County. In the same year, Fogang was incorporated into Conghua County. 1960 saw the restoration of Yangshan County, and Lianyang Autonomous County was renamed Lianzhou Autonomous County. 1961 saw the restoration of Fogang County, Lian County, Lianshan County, and Liannan Yao Autonomous County, and in 1962 saw the restoration of Lianshan Zhuang and Yao Autonomous County.
After the founding of New China until June 1983, Fogang County was mostly under the jurisdiction of Shaoguan, and during the period from January 1959 to June 14, 1963, it was successively under the jurisdiction of Foshan and Guangzhou. In September 1991, the provincial government issued a document approving the establishment of the Qingyuan Pilot Economic Development Zone for Poverty Alleviation in Guangdong Province, and the Pilot Poverty Alleviation Zone Administrative Committee was established at the beginning of 1992 (at the level of deputy department), as a dispatching organization of the municipal government, which had full authority to lead and manage the administrative affairs and economic work of the Pilot Economic Development Zone.
In 2003, the "Qingyuan Economic Development Pilot Zone", which was added in 1995, and the "Eco-Industrial Park of Qingyuan Economic Development Pilot Zone", which was set up in 2002, were integrated into the Guangdong Province Qingyuan High-tech Industrial Development Zone (GDQHIDZ).2007 In March, the brand of Guangdong Qingyuan Economic Development Zone was added.
In 2008, Longtang Town, formerly under the jurisdiction of Qingcheng District, was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Development Zone, and in 2012, Longtang Town was again transferred to the jurisdiction of Qingcheng District.
In 1994, Yingde and Lianxian County were changed to a county-level city (with Lianxian County being called Lianzhou City), which was administered by Qingyuan City.
In order to properly resettle the immigrants of the Feilaixia Water Conservancy Hub Project, and to promote the economic prosperity and long-term peace and security of the reservoir area, in September 1995, approved by the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government, the Feilaixia Management District was set up as a dispatching organization of the Municipal Government, with jurisdiction over four towns, namely, Shengping of Qingxin County, Lixi, Lianjiangkou and Shubian of Yingde City, etc. In October 2001, approved by the Provincial Government, the Feilaixia Management District was abolished, and its subordinate towns were still under the jurisdiction of Qingcheng District. The towns under its jurisdiction are still under the jurisdiction of Qingxin County and Yingde City.
In November 2012, the State Council approved the abolition of Qingxin County and the establishment of Qingxin District.
In 2016, Qingyuan City has jurisdiction over Qingcheng District, Qingxin District, Fogang County, Yangshan County, Liannan Yao Autonomous County, Lianshan Zhuang and Yao Autonomous County, and it also administers Yingde City and Lianzhou City.

Qingyuan City is located in the north-central part of Guangdong Province, in the middle reaches of the Beijiang River, on the south side of the Nanling Mountain Range, and on the Pearl River Delta. It is located between latitude 23?26′56″~25?11′40″ north and longitude 111?55′17″~113?55′34″ east, connecting Guangzhou and Foshan City in the south, Hunan Province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the north, bordering Shaoguan City in the east and northeast, and neighboring Zhaoqing City in the west and southwest.
Qingyuan City is 190 kilometers away from each other in the north and south, about 230 kilometers away from each other in the east and west, and the border line is more than 1,200 kilometers long.
