Annual herbs. Culms tufted, 8-85 box meters tall, compressed tri-angled. Leaf blades long linear, shorter than culms, 3-5 mm wide, leaf sheaths reddish brown. Leafy bracts 3-5; long lateral branching cymes recurrent, radiating branches 4-9, up to 12 cm, each radiating branch with 5-10 spikes; spikes 1-4 cm, with 5-22 spikelets; spikelets laxly arranged, oblong to linear-lanceolate, compressed, 4-10 mm, with 6-22 flowers, scales laxly arranged, membranous, broadly obovate, apex emarginate, mucronate, with 3-6 veins. Nutlets obovate or elliptic, trigonous, brown. Nutlets obovate or elliptic, 3-angled, brown.
Born in paddy fields and riverside wetlands.
Distributed in NE, N, NW, S, E, C, and SW provinces and regions; also in Korea, Japan, India, Malaysia, Oceania, Africa, and North America
