What is shortening?
Shortening refers to fats, oils and other shortening used to make bread and cakes.

This word will be used in ordinary cookbooks to refer to a hydrogenated liquid vegetable oil (crisco is one of them), which is a white solid vegetable oil. Crisco can be bought in some large supermarkets!

However, when buying this crisco, it must be noted that crisco has two formulas, old and new. The new term "0℅ trfat" means trans fat, while the old term "trfat" means nutritional fact, because trans fat will increase the level of harmful cholesterol (low-density cholesterol) and decrease the level of beneficial cholesterol (high-density cholesterol), thus increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

In fact, if you just use it to make cookies and cakes, you can use butter instead! Oil for short refers to edible hydrogenated oil of animal and vegetable oils.
