The yellow-throated marten is a small but fierce animal, and is a national second-level protected animal. In terms of appearance, the body length of the yellow-throated marten is generally between 56-65 cm. The body is cylindrical, and the hair on the body is soft and slender. The yellow-throated marten has short limbs but a very slender tail (38-43 cm). In addition, the hair of the yellow-throated marten is mainly yellow-brown and black or dark brown, and the name "yellow-throated marten" comes from the yellow-brown hair from the throat, chest to waist.
Although yellow-throated martens look very cute and harmless, they actually have a very fierce personality. The yellow-throated marten is a carnivore, and its prey includes insects, fish, birds, large and small mammals, etc. The yellow-throated marten has very agile speed, excellent tree climbing ability and good vision. With these advantages, the yellow-throated marten can subdue giant pandas, small wild boars, goats and other animals that are larger than itself. Based on its excellent hunting ability, the yellow-throated marten has very strong environmental adaptability. As far as the habitat is concerned, the yellow-throated marten mainly lives in forest areas below an altitude of 3,000 meters.
Because the distribution of yellow-throated martens is relatively scattered, their breeding time is not very uniform. For example, the breeding time of southern yellow-throated martens is usually in spring every year. Generally speaking, animals like yellow-throated martens usually come into estrus in June and July every year. After mating is completed, the female yellow-throated marten will go through a gestation period of up to nine or ten months, and then give birth around May of the following year. Yellow-throated martens can give birth to 2-4 cubs in one litter, and the birthing locations are mostly tree holes.
Globally, yellow-throated martens are widely distributed in China, Bangladesh, Thailand, Nepal and many other countries. In China, the yellow-throated marten is distributed in Heilongjiang, Hebei, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Yunnan and other places. However, due to the impact of the reduction of forest area, the overall number of yellow-throated martens has decreased in recent years. At this stage, the yellow-throated marten is classified as a non-endangered animal internationally, and it is a national second-level protected animal in China.
