Alfalfa: an annual or perennial herb. Stems erect or spread. Compound leaves, with 3 clover leaflets, fine teeth on the upper edge of the leaflets, and stipules attached to the base of the petiole. Flowers are small, yellow or purple, in short racemes or heads, axillary. The calyx teeth are nearly equal in length, the flag petal is oblong or obovate, and the stamen is (9)+ 1.
