Scophthalmus maximus is naturally distributed on the European coast on the east side of the Atlantic Ocean, and is common in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It is distributed in the sea off the coast of Iceland at 68 degrees north latitude, along the coast of Scandinavia in the south and off the coast of Morocco at 30 degrees north latitude.
