Huludao is a prefecture-level city in Liaoning Province, located on the western coast of Liaoning Province, neighboring Jinzhou in the east, Shanhaiguan in the west, the Bohai Sea in the south, and Chaoyang City in the north, forming the Bohai Rim Economic Circle with Dalian, Yingkou, Qinhuangdao, Qingdao, and other cities, and an important gateway to Guannei for northeast China. Originally known as Jinxi City, Huludao was upgraded to a provincial municipality in 1989. Huludao has a temperate monsoon climate; it is surrounded by mountains and the sea, and the terrain gradually decreases from northwest to southeast.

By the end of 2005, the city had a total population of 2,737,100, of which 943,100 were urbanized. Huludao is located in the middle temperate zone and has a continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The average annual temperature is 9.0 degrees Celsius, and the average annual precipitation ranges from 563 millimeters to 642 millimeters.
Huludao's territory is surrounded by mountains and hills, with many low hills in the northwest, which are divided into the Yanshan Mountain Range and the Songling Mountain Range, and there are more than 500 rivers of various sizes in the territory***. Huludao City is rich in mineral resources, advantageous mineral deposits are mainly molybdenum, lead, zinc, manganese, coal, oil, natural gas, etc., of which molybdenum and manganese production respectively accounted for one-third of the country, is one of the world's three major molybdenum production base; coal is the most important energy minerals in Huludao City, the cumulative proved reserves of 400 million tons; the offshore seabed crude oil reserves of 300 million tons, and natural gas reserves of 13.5 billion cubic meters.
