2. Legend has it that if you don't eat jiaozi on the winter solstice, your ears will freeze off. It comes from the "Quhan Jiaoer Decoction" by Zhang Zhongjing, a medical sage in the Eastern Han Dynasty, which is a treatment for chilblain. According to legend, in the last years of the Eastern Han Dynasty, disasters continued all over the country, and people were suffering from plagues. Zhang Zhongjing, a doctor who retired from his old age, was not idle. He was busy treating diseases and saving people all day, but there were still many villagers who could not be treated. In the winter of one year, the weather was unusually cold, and the people who didn't have enough to eat all day, together with illness, lost a lot of resistance. Many people couldn't stand the cold and got frostbite. The patient with severe chilblain lost his life, and Zhang Zhongjing was very sad. Seeing the patient fall in front of his eyes, there was nothing he could do.
3. In order to help people get rid of chilblain, Zhang Zhongjing still boiled the cold-expelling herbs in the pot, and put some detoxified Chili powder in the pot. After cooking, he put those materials in the dough and distributed them to the people. This medicine is equivalent to medicated diet, which can satisfy hunger and cure diseases, killing two birds with one stone. The people ate the medicated diet given by Zhang Zhongjing and felt hot all over. After eating for a while, the frostbite has also healed. Later, in order to commemorate the medical sage Zhang Zhongjing, people eat this medicinal diet every winter solstice. With the passage of history, this medicinal diet has gradually developed into dumplings. Therefore, the custom of eating dumplings on the winter solstice is popular among the people, so that the ears will not be frostbitten.
