In the history of China's automobile industry, Beijing 212 is considered a "living fossil" level of models, listed more than fifty years ago, the appearance of the basic has not changed much, and is still in production today. The 212 is not alone, in Russia there is also a model born in the 1960s, more than 50 years of appearance and interior is basically unchanged, and is still in production, which is produced by the Russian Ulyanovsk Automobile Manufacturing Plant Wazhi Traveler.
The Vazzy Traveler is a flat-top van similar to the old Gold Cup, with an overall appearance similar to that of the Volkswagen T2, but of course, as a model born in the same era as the 212, it also has some elements similar to the 212, such as the round headlights that are the same as those of the 212, and the turn signals on the lower side of the headlights, which are also round, and the front bumper, which is made of a very simple iron material. Although it was designed more than 50 years ago, this front look is still very classic now.
The side of the body is also full of the sense of the times, and like the current triangular-door version of the 212, the front doors and the body use the most primitive and simple hinge structure, and the door hinges are directly exposed to the outside, very rough. Behind the doors there are three more windows, and this Wazoo Traveler has only the driver's door on the left side, with the door for rear passengers to get in and out of the car placed on the right side, but instead of a side-sliding door, it's also a flush door.
At the rear, this Wazi Traveler has a folio rear tailgate, which is similar to some of today's light bus models, with a large opening throughout the trunk for easy loading and unloading of cargo, and because of the high ground clearance, it will be easy to carry things down from the car, but of course the opposite is true for putting things up.
Interior, the center console of this Wazoo Wanderer is even more spartan than the 212's. There's no styling to speak of, it's just a tin bar, and there's no plastic wrapped around it, so it's cold and hard. And the instrument panel is not in the traditional rear of the steering wheel, but placed in the center of the center console, only a speedometer. There are a couple of push-button switches on the lower part of the dash. Like the 212, the car has hand-cranked window switches.
The engine on this Wazoo Wanderer is laid out differently from the common van layout of placing it under the front seats, but in the middle of the front seats, with what looks like a large armrest box in the middle of the seats being the engine cover, a layout similar to the old Yellow River trucks of the day.
The vehicle is powered by a 2.4L gasoline engine with a maximum power of 108kW and a maximum torque of 230N-m, which is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Although this is a big van, like the 212, it's also a hardcore off-roader, with a ladder-frame monocoque axle structure with large beams, leaf-spring non-independent suspension front and rear, and a time-sharing four-wheel drive system with standard rear axle differential lock. So this Wazoo Traveler is the 212 of vans.
The most important thing is that this Russian version of the 212 van original imported to the domestic market, it is reported that the domestic price of the Wazi Traveler for 158,800, which compared to the year that had been parallel imported into the country's Volkswagen T2 more than 600,000 yuan of the price of conscience a lot.
But it is certain that this van version of the 212 and our domestic Beijing 212, destined to be a niche model of sentiment, of course, imported into the country is a 7-seat version, for such a four-wheel drive with a beam of the 7-seat cross-country van, the practicality of the van is also still quite good.
