Distributed in Japan as well as the East China Sea and South China Sea, inhabiting a depth of 25-615 meters, with a body length of up to 40 centimeters, it is a benthic fish, and can be made into a food fish. The mode of origin of this species is Zhoushan and Ningbo in China. It is mostly caught by trawlers and is usually eaten in soup or fried to make the bones crispy.
The body is elongated and slightly laterally compressed. The back and sides of the head are covered with bony plates. The buccal region is ribbed. Small spines on the muzzle. Head, thorax and anterior part of the abdomen are scale-free. Anal fin opposite second dorsal fin. Dorsal surface red, abdominal white; inner surface of the pectoral fins dark olive-green, with many blue spots scattered over the lower half, and an additional blue margin, black patches occasionally appearing on the lower half.
