What are the characteristics of Huyanhua (bear's paw) and its technical points?

Huyanhua is a national protected plant, belonging to the genus Huyanhua, also known as Paederia. Originated in yangchun city, Guangdong Province, it is a high-grade foliage plant with huge leaves, beautiful leaf shape, strong shade tolerance, small and exquisite flower buds and bright colors.

perennial evergreen herb, with nearly lignified short stolons, very short erect stems, membranous leaves, heart-shaped, round top, fine teeth on the edge, hairless on the top, densely hairy on the bottom, and young petioles with reddish-brown hairs. The leaves are 2 ~ 3 cm long, and there are 9 parallel lateral veins at the base, which are perpendicular to the basal veins. The total pedicel is 2 ~ 3 cm long, with blunt four edges and 5 florets, which form an axillary scorpion-tail cyme. The flowering period is 1 ~ 2 months, the petals are dark red, obovate, with one side inclined, the stamens are 5, the anthers are linear, the ovaries are ovoid, superior, 5-celled, and the capsules are funnel-shaped and cup-shaped. The fruiting period is from March to April.

The propagation methods include sowing, cutting and rameting. Sowing is done immediately after the seeds are picked, shallow sowing, and the substrate is made of humus soil 2, peat soil 2 and fine sand 1, which are disinfected and sieved, evenly sown after soaking in water, covered with fine soil or fine sand, and germinated at 18 ~ 25℃ for 3 days and potted for 2 months.

by dividing plants or cutting, the mother plant is carefully taken out when changing pots in spring without breaking leaves, and the stolon is cut into 2-3 leaves in each section, and the cut is dried and then planted separately. Apply sulfur powder or herbal ash to the wound.

Key points of cultivation techniques:

Huyanhua is wild in the shady and humid place of the valley dense forest, and likes high temperature and humid semi-shady environment. It can withstand short-term winter at ℃ and above 5℃, and its growth temperature is 17 ~ 3℃, and it is not resistant to drought and avoids direct sunlight. The shading rate in summer is 5% ~ 7%.

(1) Fertilizer and water management Huyanhua requires high water content, high air humidity, but can't accumulate water. It should be watered once a day in summer, and water can't be sprayed directly on the leaves to prevent leaf rot. During the growing period, compound fertilizer mainly containing nitrogen should be applied once a week, and thin fertilizer should be applied frequently.

(2) The substrate should be fertile, loose, organic-rich, breathable acid soil. Generally, the mixture of humus soil, peat and coarse sand is 2∶1∶1, and decomposed cow dung or chicken manure is added as the base fertilizer.

(3) Pests and diseases are prone to stem rot and root rot in summer due to high temperature and humidity, which can be controlled with 1 times solution of 25% carbendazim or thiophanate methyl, and root rot can be soaked with 1 times streptomycin. Pests include snails, slugs and caterpillars, so pay attention to prevention and control.
