1 According to folk legend, Zongzi is eaten to commemorate the great patriotic poet Qu Yuan. In the Records of Historical Records, people can know that Qu Yuan was a minister of Chu and was bent on uniting with Qi against Qin. However, Qu Yuan's idea met with opposition, and finally Qu Yuan was framed and demoted. During his exile, Qu Yuan was heartbroken when he learned that Chu had been attacked by Qin, and threw himself into the Miluo River to die.

2. In the 16th year of Zhou Nanwang (299 BC), the State of Qin captured eight cities of Chu, and then sent envoys to invite Chu Huaiwang to make peace with the State of Qin. Qu Yuan entered the palace to state his interests, but Chu Huaiwang refused to listen and expelled Qu Yuan from Yingdu. Chu Huaiwang attended the meeting as scheduled, and was imprisoned as soon as he arrived in Qin. Chu Huaiwang died in Qin three years later. In the thirty-seventh year of Zhou Nanwang (278 B.C.), shortly after the downfall of the king of Chu, Qin generals attacked the capital of Chu, Yong City, and Chu avoided Qin Jun's power and moved its capital to Chen. The downfall of the king left the capital in a panic, and Chi captured Yong City.

3. After hearing the news that Ying City had been breached, Qu Yuan was desperate and threw himself into the Guluo River. When people heard that Dr. Qu Yuan threw himself into the river, they all came to the river and tried to salvage Qu Yuan's body. People took out zongzi and eggs from their homes and threw them into the river, so that the fish would not bite Dr. Qu's body. There is also a doctor who pours realgar wine into the river so that the medicine can stun the dragon and water beast. Since then, every year on the fifth day of May, the people of Chu go to the river to row dragon boats, throw zongzi and drink realgar wine to commemorate Qu Yuan, and the custom of eating zongzi on the Dragon Boat Festival has been handed down for thousands of years.
