2026 World Cup format plan
48 teams are divided into 12 groups. The two and eight third-placed teams with the best results advance to the top 32, and a new round of 1/16 finals will be added to the knockout round. The entire tournament consists of 104 games and lasts for 40 days. The winning team will need to play 8 games instead of the previous 7 games. The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The South American region has 6 direct promotion places and 1 play-off place.
According to the rules, an Asian team, an African team, a South American team, an Oceanian team and two North, Central and Caribbean teams will participate in the play-offs to compete for the last two promotions Quota. The 2026 World Cup will have 48 teams participating in the finals for the first time.
