Sweet corn has excellent palatability, soft and delicate texture, thick meat and thin skin, and fragrant flavor.
After maturity, the harvested corn kernels can be processed into corn grits to cook porridge, and processed into corn to make various foods.
Let’s learn how to grow sweet corn and learn about the key points of sweet corn planting technology.
Key points for planting sweet corn
1. It should be planted isolated (300m) from other corns to prevent corns from getting mixed up.
2. Sow seeds in stages and harvest in batches to ensure high quality and high price.
For sowing from late February to early March, double film covering should be used for germination sowing and cultivation, and floppy disk germination sowing and seedling cultivation should be used.
After early April, germination can be carried out live in the open field.
Sow seeds in early autumn from mid-July to early August.
3. Planting in wide and narrow rows.
The wide rows are 80cm, the narrow rows are 50cm, the distance between plants (holes) is 27cm, the density is 3500 holes per acre, 2 germination seeds are sown in each hole, the seedlings are fixed at the 4-leaf stage, and 1 strong seedling is left in each hole.
About 3,500 seedlings per mu are maintained.
4. Use organic fertilizer as the main fertilizer and apply sufficient base fertilizer.
Apply 1500kg of pig and cow manure or 80kg of compound fertilizer per mu, apply seedling fertilizer early at the 4-5 leaf stage, and apply 15-20kg of urea per mu as ear fertilizer at the 9-leaf stage (large trumpet stage).
Sweet corn must be harvested in time
Tender ears should be harvested within 20-30 days after pollination for sweet corn, 20-25 days after pollination for super-sweet corn, and 20-25 days after pollination for ordinary sweet corn. Corn and enhanced sweet corn can be harvested a few days later. If canned, it can be harvested 1-2 days earlier. Green and tender corn sold can be harvested 1-2 days later.
You can also sample and taste parts according to the characteristics of the variety. As long as the taste is achieved, you can start harvesting according to this standard.
Sweet corn fruit can be kept fresh for 5 days at 16°C, but can only be kept fresh for 1-2 days at 29°C. At 35°C, the sugar content will be significantly reduced in about 12 hours, losing commercial value.
Therefore, the transportation time of sweet corn must be shortened after harvesting, or the method of cooling and preservation must be adopted.
Strengthen pest and disease control
Sweet corn is very popular among insect families due to its high sugar content.
Mainly include: corn borers, armyworms, chafers, thrips, aphids, etc.
Stink bugs (commonly known as "slap bugs") mainly occur in Sichuan during the fruit ripening period.
The most serious damage occurs on the ear of the fruit. The damaged corn kernels become hard, white or yellow, and stunted.
Most of them migrate in from other corn fields.
Stink bugs are highly mobile and difficult to control.
For prevention and control, pesticides such as Nongdile, Bifenthrin (Uranus), and Ruijinte can be used.
