On New Year's Day, jiaozi or Tangyuan?
Jiaozi is eaten in the north and glutinous rice balls are eaten in the south. In the north of China, because jiaozi is shaped like an ingot, eating jiaozi on New Year's Day means "New Year's new atmosphere, good luck". In the south of China, because dumplings symbolize reunion and happiness, they are usually eaten on New Year's Day to celebrate. Because there are cultural differences between the north and the south, on New Year's Day, people usually eat jiaozi in the north and dumplings in the south.
