Chaozhou dialect, formerly called "Chaozhou dialect", is now generally called "Chaoshan dialect", also called Chaoshan dialect, which is called "Chaozhou dialect" for short. It is a branch of Minnan dialect, with Shantou dialect as the standard pronunciation. It is also one of the oldest and most special dialects in China. Min dialect, which is popular in eastern Guangdong, has a population of about100000. Together with overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong and Macao, the population exceeds 25 million.

From Sui and Tang Dynasties to Song Dynasty, Chaozhou began a large-scale feudal civilization, which made the local dialect influenced by Chinese in the Central Plains and evolved in the direction of sinicization. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, Fujian dialect constantly absorbed foreign language factors and gradually formed a unique dialect.

After the Song Dynasty, with the influx of large-scale immigrants and the development of Chaozhou economy, the culture continued to develop, and the eastern Guangdong region centered on Chaozhou was comparable to the southern Fujian region, which accelerated the pace of the differentiation of Chaozhou dialect into southern Fujian dialect. After the Ming Dynasty, Chaozhou dialect was completely separated from Fujian dialect and became an independent sub-dialect.
