Lycopodiaceae, Lycophagidae; ; A family of LEPIDOPTERA. Commonly known as itchy peppers, hot, eight racks, Shuang Mu shelves or spiny caterpillars. There are 1000 species recorded all over the world, and about 90 species recorded in China. Because this larva has thorns and poisonous hair, the skin will be red and swollen immediately and the pain will be abnormal.
Adults are medium-sized, with dense hairs on the body surface and front wings, thick scales, mostly yellow-brown, dark gray-green, red at intervals, and a few stripes on white background. Nocturnal activity, phototaxis Mouth degeneration, lower lip must be short, a few longer. The antenna of male moth is generally double comb-shaped, with short and wide wings. The larvae are flat and slug-like, with branches and poisonous hairs on them, and some species are smooth, hairless or tuberculous. The head can be contracted. Some kinds of cocoons have patterns that look like birds' eggs. During eclosion, one end of the cocoon splits and the dome flies out. Larvae mostly feed on the leaves of broad-leaved trees, and a few harm bamboo poles and rice. They are common pests in forests, gardens, street trees, orchards and various economic plants (such as coffee, tea and mulberry).
