It is distributed in the southwest Atlantic Ocean, from Brazil to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, with a habitat depth of 22-133m. This fish has a blue or green back, a white belly, many dark blue spots on its side and 47-56 soft dorsal fins. The gluteal fin has 40-48 soft bands, which can reach 38 cm in length and inhabit the middle, upper and lower waters.
