Memory palaces can cause hallucinations. The hallucinations are mainly due to the problems with the learning method of mnemonics mentioned in Memory Palace, a mnemonic method that is said to memorize things by associating the memory with something particularly stimulating or relevant to one's life.
The Memory Palace, a 2007 Rye Press book by Jonathan Spence, is a book about how Matteo Ricci himself was able to memorize things, and how, in 1984, Yale history geek Jonathan Spence reimagined Ricci's Western mnemonic method.
