Longgang Town was formed in the late Yuan Dynasty. It was called Longchuan City in the Ming Dynasty and changed to Longgang City in the late Qing Dynasty. During the Second Civil Revolutionary War, it was Longyan District; in June 1949, it was the Fifth District of Yangxin County; in October 1951, it was changed to the Eighth District.

In January 1956, it was renamed Longgang District; in December 1958, Longgang People's Commune was established.

In June 1961, it was renamed Longgang District; in February 1975, the district organization was abolished and three people's communes, Longgang, Yangang and Fushui, were established.

Longgang Town has a subtropical monsoon climate, with sufficient sunlight and rainfall, and four distinct seasons in spring, summer, autumn and winter. , the annual average temperature is 16.8℃, the extreme maximum temperature is 41.4℃ (August 10, 1966), the extreme minimum temperature is -14.9℃ (February 1, 1969), and the frost-free period is 263 days. The average annual sunshine hours are 1897.1 hours, and the sunshine rate is 44%.

The average annual rainfall is 1389.6mm. There is a decreasing trend from southwest to northeast, with an average annual rainfall of 147 days, the most in summer, and the average rainfall from April to July is 739.9㎜. Rainfall is large and intense, often causing floods.
