Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge is a long-span steel suspension bridge which is "the first in China and the fourth in the world".
Ranked first in the world: Akashi Strait Bridge in Japan, built at 1998, with a main span of 1 990 meters;
Second: Humber Bridge in Denmark, under construction, with a main span of 1 624m;
Third: Heimberg Bridge in England, completed in 198 1 year, with a main span of 1 4 10 m;

Difficulties Even though there are successful examples of suspension bridges abroad, due to the unique geological, hydrological and climatic conditions in Jiangyin and Jingjiang, foreign experience cannot be completely replicated. There are still many technical difficulties in the process of bridge construction, which are briefly described as follows:
North Anchor Caisson-The two anchors of the bridge will pull the main cable of the bridge together. The Zhang Liwei of the main cable is 64,000 tons, while the north anchor is located on the alluvial plain. The plane size of underground open caisson is 69 meters long and 5 1 m wide, and the area is equivalent to 10 basketball courts. If it sinks, it will pass through four different soil layers, which may cause serious skew and distortion.
Erection of main cable-The main cable is the main load-bearing component of Jiangyin Bridge, with the total weight of steel deck of18,000 tons, the total weight of asphalt pavement of 5,000 tons and live load. Jiangyin Bridge has two main cables with a total weight of 8,400 tons, consisting of 169 strands, each of which weighs 50 tons. The erection of main cable adopts precast parallel strand method (PPWS), and 50-ton and 2200m-long strands are erected in the air. From traction, stretching, molding to cable adjustment, there are many unforeseen technical difficulties in each link. Moreover, when working high at night, the weather has a great influence, and its erection difficulty is unique in China.
Deck Laying-5 cm thick asphalt concrete is laid on the deck of steel box girder. Because of the strong thermal conductivity of steel box girder, the temperature is very high in summer and very low in winter, it is difficult to give consideration to the characteristics of asphalt. However, the temperature conditions in Jiangyin are worse than those in western countries, ranging from-15℃ to 70℃. Without precedent, after more than a year of research and experiment, we finally found a scheme that can meet the specific requirements of Jiangyin Bridge and solved this world problem.
