Ando started skating at the age of nine. Two years later, she achieved the triple jump for the first time. Ando is the first and so far the only female skater to complete the Salchow in the competition (20021February FINA Junior Grand Prix Final in The Hague). Before focusing on skating, Ando tried many other activities, such as swimming, ballet, playing the piano and calligraphy. Ando's idol in the skating world is 1994 world champion Yukio Sato. She was also inspired by shizuka arakawa's performance in the 1998 Olympic Games.
