The story took place in Henan province on 1942, when the famine was at its worst. The young Hao Yulan (Chen Xiaoyi) followed her father to join the fleeing team and came to Xiaoxiao East Gate in Xi 'an. Although she didn't starve to death, life there was still very difficult. In desperation, Hao Yulan married a man named Bai Laosi (played by Dahongni). Bai Laosi is not only twenty years older than Hao Yulan, but also has two sons. In this way, Hao Yulan has become a woman without experiencing love.

Although the reality is full of despair, Hao Yulan never gave up her hopes and dreams. She gave birth to five children for Bai Laosi and brought them up with great maternal love and perseverance.
