He also devoted a lot of energy to holding administrative posts, participating in various social activities and hosting many important academic groups. Mr. Ji served as the head of the Department of Oriental Studies at Peking University for 41 years, and made great contributions to the teaching and research development of non-common languages in Asia and Africa in China, and devoted a lot of efforts to the development of orientalism, Dunhuang studies, comparative literature, Buddhist studies and the history of Sino-foreign relations in China, making outstanding contributions. His more than 111 works have been compiled into 24 volumes of Ji Xianlin's Collected Works.

On his 91th birthday, Mr. Ji Xianlin, a master of Chinese studies, returned to his hometown of Linqing, Shandong Province. Nearly 311 people from all walks of life at home and abroad attended the birthday celebration. Facing relatives in his hometown, Mr. Ji Xianlin couldn't hold back his excitement and expressed his good wishes for the country and his hometown.

I want to cry twice in the face of my later life

Mr. Ji Xianlin was born in Guanzhuang on August 6, 1911. He went to Jinan to study at the age of 6 in 1917, was admitted to Tsinghua University in 1931, and was employed by Peking University after returning from German studies in 1946, and founded the Oriental Language Department. As one of the few scholars in the world who are proficient in Fanba and Tohoku, he enjoys a high reputation in the world. Although he lived in the outside world for most of his life, he always kept a lingering attachment to his hometown in his heart.

In Guanzhuang, Mr. Ji has several relatives, all of whom are his junior. They helped the old man into the old house. At the suggestion of Mr. Ji, he and several relatives worshipped their ancestors. Mr. Ji deeply missed his mother. He left her at the age of 6 and went home eight years later. Her mother had passed away and never saw her again.

In an essay, he quoted "the son wants to be filial and his relatives are absent", expressing the pain that has haunted him all his life. For his hometown, Mr. Ji Xianlin's attachment is also beyond words. He recalled with deep affection: "In my early years, I was admitted to Tsinghua, and my family was very difficult. Qingping County (then called Qingping in Linqing) subsidized students admitted to the university with 151 yuan every year. Without that 151 yuan, it would be difficult for me to finish Tsinghua and I will always be grateful to my hometown."

give it a peach and return it with a plum. Over the years, Mr. Ji has been attached to his hometown, donated thousands of books to children in his hometown, and set up scholarships to reward outstanding teachers and students, hoping to produce more talents in his hometown. Hometown people are also full of gratitude to Mr. Ji. Mr. Ji likes children, and when faced with simple peasant children, his eyes were full of tears.

I am a farmer, and the quality I admire most is loyalty.

Mr. Ji Xianlin has won the admiration of the world with his humble and simple personality charm. Such a master who is well versed in Chinese and Western learning is always proud of being a farmer. He said: "I am very excited that so many people hold birthday celebrations for me today, but what I feel most is shame." I feel that I am not so great. I am a very ordinary person and have never been ambitious. Although I have done some things today, I still have a long way to go from the country and the expectations of my hometown, so I feel very embarrassed. "

Mr. Ji said that he was a farmer and was very interested in crops and rain. He said that when the train came to Qing Dynasty, I saw Shandong from Hebei along the way and saw that the crops were good. I don't want to mention how happy I was.

during the ten-year catastrophe, Mr. Ji Xianlin risked his life to translate the Indian epic Ramayana, which became a great event in the world translation history, but his real academic sprint was after 71 years old. Over the years, the accumulation of Chinese and western cultural literacy has enabled him to accumulate wealth and develop talents. In recent years, Mr. Ji Xianlin has edited the Collection handed down from ancient times, the Catalogue Series of Sikuquanshu, and published 24 volumes of Collected Works of Ji Xianlin. Mr. Ji Xianlin said that his scholarship is like a farmer's cultivation, and a penny of cultivation is rewarded with a penny of harvest, and his continuous writing of more than 7 million words has indeed created a miracle in academic circles.

Wang Xiaotang, a famous performing artist, made a special trip to Qing Dynasty to celebrate Mr. Ji Xianlin's birthday with his new film Fragrant Oath. The old man was deeply touched after watching it. He said that our Chinese nation has many outstanding points, which can be summed up as loyalty. In the movie Fragrant Oath, the hero has a good saying-the foundation of Chinese nation and Chinese culture is loyalty. "The reason why I may have done something is because I have been loyal to our motherland, our Shandong and our hometown Linqing all my life."

It's never too old to learn. Mr. Ji Xianlin's goal is to live to the age of 121. Mr. Ji Xianlin is quick-thinking and in good health, and many people ask him about his secret of longevity. His answer is: "I have three noes, that is, no exercise, no picky eaters and no muttering."

He said that the so-called "no exercise" is not against physical exercise, but against doing nothing but exercise. People should still study more. It's never too old to learn, so that their thinking will never become rigid.

Mr. Ji Xianlin has achieved great success. Is this the beginning of his retirement? Mr. Ji Xianlin said, "People feel that 91 years old is very old out of concern for me. But now the life expectancy of China people has doubled. My calculation is that 71 years old is middle age and 91 years old is old age. In that case, I'm just a newcomer. I don't think it's a problem to live to 95 years old, nor is it a problem to live to 111 years old at 99 years old. Further, I don't think it's a great goal to be 118 years old. When I was in Beijing, I often stayed with my old friend Cang Kejia. When I met him recently, he said he would live to be 121. I said, if I live to be 121, you will be 126. He is six years older than me. The two of us have agreed that the goal is to live to be 121 years old. "

as soon as the old man's voice fell, everyone applauded and laughed. Mr. Ji Xianlin said that it is a good thing that the living standard has improved and the life span has been extended, but how should we live? He can still work eight hours a day. He has a saying: Eat to live, but people don't live to eat. As long as they live for one day, they should work for one day, so that life can be meaningful.

"being the first, learning the second"

In recent years, driven by interests, many pirates wantonly pirated famous works. Many of Mr. Ji Xianlin's works have also been targeted by pirates. When it comes to the topic of piracy, the old man's kind face is somewhat dignified. He said, "There are too many books stolen from me in the market. Someone gave me a general statistic. There are about 1 million pirated books in the market, mainly essays. This not only infringes on the author's labor achievements, but also damages the legitimate interests of readers. Readers should keep their eyes open, identify the authenticity, and don't give pirated booksellers any chance. "

Mr. Ji has studied the eastern and western cultures all his life. Comparatively speaking, he believes that the morality and values of the eastern culture are more in line with the development direction of the world. He proudly said that the 21th century must be the century of China, and the success of the Olympic bid is a good example. Mr. Ji said that he has been engaged in education all his life and has done nothing else. What is the purpose of education? The first thing we advocated in China was "being human" and being the first. The so-called "moral article", of course, must first talk about morality, and then talk about the article, which is the foundation. Being the first, learning the second. I hope all people will do this "moral article" well and carry forward the moral core of "loyalty".

I left home to study at the age of six

Before I was six, Mr. Ji Xianlin had a teacher, Mr. Ma Jinggong. What he taught Mr. Ji Xianlin has now completely forgotten. When he left home at the age of six, Mr Ji Xianlin went to Jinan to join his uncle. He fled to Jinan to make a living in desperation. From then on, Mr. Ji Xianlin began to go to school. He once studied in a private school for some time, reading nothing more than Hundred Family Names, Thousand Characters, San Zi Jing, Four Books and so on, and then went on to primary school.

Mr. Ji Xianlin passed the third place in Grade A and the first place in Grade B in Xinyu Primary School. He is not a top student and doesn't study hard. Three years old, ordinary. One thing worth mentioning is that Mr. Ji Xianlin began to learn English. At that time, there were no English classes in regular primary schools. Mr. Ji Xianlin studied English in his spare time. I haven't studied for a long time, just a little grammar and some words.

It never occurred to Mr. Ji Xianlin that because of this knowledge of English, he spent half a year applying for middle school. At that time, Namwin in Shandong Middle School was the first middle school in Shandong Province. At that time, Mr Ji Xianlin didn't even have the courage to register, but only enrolled in a poor Zhengyi Middle School. But this school actually took an English test in the exam, and the topic was Chinese-English translation: "I have got a new book, and I have read a few pages, but I don't know some words." Mr. Ji Xianlin translated it, but he was troubled for a long time because he didn't know the English translation of the word "already". As a result, he was admitted, not a freshman, but a year and a half.

During his study in Zhengyi Middle School, Mr. Ji Xianlin didn't work hard either, and his grades hovered between the last few of Grade A and the first few of Grade B, belonging to the upper-middle level. After class, he ran to the lake behind the school to catch shrimps and toads. I don't know what hard work is. However, his uncle has great expectations and strict requirements for him. He personally gave lectures to Mr. Ji Xianlin, and chose a book, Selected Works of My Nephew, which was mostly articles on Neo-Confucianism. Uncle didn't receive any systematic education, but he was extremely clever, relying entirely on self-study, reading a lot of classics and history subsets, being able to write poems, be good at books and carve seals. He has no boys, and all his hopes are pinned on Mr. Ji Xianlin.

Mr. Ji Xianlin said, "I managed to learn something today, all thanks to him, and I will never forget it. According to his request, after Zhengyi's class, I attended an ancient Chinese learning class and read books such as Zuo Zhuan, Warring States Policy and Historical Records. In the evening, I will go to Shangshi English Society to learn English, and I won't go home until ten o'clock in the evening. It took about eight years to live like this. I didn't feel any burden at that time; But I don't understand its far-reaching significance, and I am still naughty, just fishing for shrimp. Looking back now, didn't I lay the foundation today, no matter how thin? "

After graduating from junior high school, Ji Xianlin attended high school in Zhengyi for half a year. In 1926, he was transferred to the newly established high school attached to Shandong University. The president of Shandong University was Shoupeng Wang, the former top scholar in Qing Dynasty and then director of education. He advocates reading classics. The teacher who taught Chinese was Mr. Wang Kunyu, an ancient prose writer of Tongcheng School, who had his own anthology and later went to Shandong University as a lecturer. He had a great influence on Ji Xianlin. The title of Ji Xianlin's first composition was "After Reading the Biography of Xu Wenchang", which was highly praised by him. His comment on writing was "Being concise and fluent". Surprised, Ji Xianlin took a keen interest in ancient Chinese prose, and got the Collected Works of Han Changli and Liu Zongyuan, as well as the collected works of Ouyang Xiu and San Su, and wanted to study them seriously.

In 1929, Ji Xianlin transferred to the newly established Jinan High School in Shandong Province and studied for one year, which was an important stage in Ji Xianlin's life. Especially in Chinese, there are several national famous writers here: Hu Yepin, Dong Qiufang, Charlotte, Dong Meikan and so on.

Inspiration comes from diligence

In 1931, Ji Xianlin graduated from high school and came to Beiping to take an examination of universities. At that time, it was very difficult to enter a famous university, and the percentage of admission was very low. In order to get more admission opportunities, almost all of the 81-odd graduates in Ji Xianlin applied to seven or eight universities. Ji Xianlin only applied to Peking University and Tsinghua, and as a result, both universities were admitted. After much deliberation, Ji Xianlin chose Tsinghua, because Ji Xianlin thought that Tsinghua had many opportunities to go abroad, and his major was German.

Of all the courses, Ji Xianlin benefited most from an elective course, namely "Literary Psychology" by Mr. Zhu Guangqian and "Buddhist Translation Literature" by Mr. Chen Yinque. These two courses have a far-reaching impact on the future development of Ji Xianlin, which can be said to have been affected until now. Ji Xianlin engaged in comparative literature and literary theory, which was obviously influenced by Mr Zhu. The history of Buddhism, Sanskrit Buddhism and the ancient languages of Central Asia are inseparable from Mr. Chen's influence.

in 1924, Ji Xianlin graduated from Tsinghua. Mr. Song Huanwu, the headmaster of his alma mater, Jinan High School, invited Ji Xianlin back to his alma mater as a Chinese teacher. I taught for a year, and in 1935, God gave me another good opportunity. Tsinghua University signed an agreement with Germany to exchange graduate students. Ji Xianlin signed up for the exam and was admitted. In the late autumn of this year, Ji Xianlin went to the University of G? ttingen and began his study and life abroad. Since 1937, Ji Xianlin has been a lecturer in Sinology Department of University of G? ttingen. Ji Xianlin was thirty-five at the end of his study abroad.

In the autumn of 1946, Ji Xianlin went to Peking University as a professor and head of the Oriental Language and Literature Department. Ji Xianlin has never left Peking University since then.

Ji Xianlin said that his experience has been condensed into two words: diligence. A few more words are: race against time, never forget. Inspiration can't be said to be absent, but it doesn't fall from the sky, but is inspired by hard work.

Ji Xianlin also has "the first occupation"

Ji Xianlin as a doctor of philosophy, whose research direction is language and literature. He doesn't like justice and reason, so he writes few philosophical articles. But in his later years, he was uncharacteristic and talked about the metaphysics of "the unity of man and nature". Once the article was published, it was shocking and influential. He also talked about another philosophy-consumption philosophy, which also caused an uproar.

consumption is related to the economic base. What is the economic base of Ji Xianlin? On the books, Ji Xianlin's salary is the highest among the teachers in Peking University, because he was the first batch of "old-level" professors identified in 1951s. But his monthly salary, after 71% discount and 81% discount, is about 711 yuan in 811 yuan on average. He will give half of the money to Zhang Shuzhen, the little babysitter. Besides her salary, she also has a boy who goes to school in the Second Middle School Attached to Peking University. Ji Xianlin will bear all the tuition, miscellaneous expenses and living expenses. In this way, he will pay the room fee, natural gas fee, electricity fee, telephone fee, etc. In fact, only 311 yuan is around.
