Life and career

Born in wolverhampton wanderers, West Midlands in p>1958. His father is Tony Slater, the factory owner, and his mother is Catherine, a housewife, the third and youngest son in the family. His mother died of asthma in 1965 when he was nine years old. When he was a teenager, he moved to Worcestershire and attended a missionary middle school. There he likes to write prose, and two boys, including himself, have reached O- level in cooking courses. In 1971, his father remarried and married DorothyPerrens. Until three years after his father's death, Slater attended Woodfield Avenue College of the University of Pennsylvania in the West Midlands.

According to the BBC article Competitive Cooking: Why should we bother ourselves? Slater claimed in his autobiography Toast that he struggled with his stepmother with delicious food to attract his father's attention. Their biggest fighting weapon is to make lemon white pie, because it is my father's favorite food. Stepmother refused to reveal her recipe, so Slater plotted to make her own lemon white pie. In his autobiography, he wrote: "I count the eggshells of the trash can to see how many eggs she uses and write them down. I will know how she does it at different times." When I secretly watched her cooking, she was making some pastry, and the recipe was slowly made in months or even years. " In this episode, another half-sister, Ann, explained that she made pies from a cookbook, not her mother.
