In the 194s, Zhang Daqian painted murals in Dunhuang for nearly three years. Under such a difficult environment, Zhang Daqian was still able to use local materials to solve the problem.

He has a recipe in Dunhuang, which includes mutton soup, sweet and sour steak, three fresh mushrooms, bean curd with soy sauce, Buddha's foot ice cream and so on.

Mushrooms are picked from the wild grass around the Mogao Grottoes, and the ice used in the Buddha's foot ice cream is really taken from the foot of the Buddha.

When he left Dunhuang, Zhang Daqian specially drew a "secret map" of the growing place of wild mushrooms, and marked the picking route and time in detail as a gift for local friends.

When Xu Wenbo, his wife, celebrates his birthday, Zhang Daqian will cook beef noodles himself. Besides four kinds of beef with different tastes, there will also be a plate of green coriander and a plate of fried mung bean sprouts with red pepper. There will also be eight dishes around, which contain eight kinds of condiments, such as salt, pepper noodles, sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, spicy oil, noodle sauce and lobster sauce.

Zhang Daqian settled in Taiwan Province in his later years, and became close friends with Zhang Xueliang and Zhang Qun, and was called "San Zhang".

Zhang Daqian hosted a menu for Zhang Xueliang and his wife in Taipei. Zhang Xueliang took it back and carefully framed it into a handkerchief, leaving a blank at the back.

The following year, he invited Zhang Daqian to paint Chinese cabbage, radish and spinach with the title "Ji Guang is beautiful". Zhang Daqian wrote a poem on it:
