According to records, rice rolls first appeared in Longzhou (now Luoding, Guangdong) in the Tang Dynasty, and evolved from a local traditional food, oil-flavored glutinous rice dumplings. The locals call it "Longkan Ci". It was an unintentional invention by a Buddhist in Longkan Dojo.
At first, he mixed steamed rice milk with oil, salt, chopped peanuts, green onions, and leeks to make a half-centimeter-thick rice cake, which was easy to eat at any time. The name of rice rolls has a great origin. During the Qianlong period, Emperor Qianlong traveled to the south of the Yangtze River. After listening to the good words of the foodie minister Ji Xiaolan, he went to Luoding to eat Longkan Ci.
When he tasted this "cool, tender and smooth" Longkan rice dumplings, Qianlong was full of praise and said happily: This rice dumplings are not really rice cakes, but rather resemble pig intestines, so why not just call them rice cakes? Rice rolls. Therefore, rice rolls got their name and spread in Guangdong. In the late Qing Dynasty, rice rolls were sold on the streets of Guangzhou.
