Rushan City is affiliated to Weihai City, Shandong Province. It is named because of the Big Rushan Mountain in its territory. The Rushan oyster culture species is Pacific oysters. The main method is raft culture. The culture areas are distributed in Rushan Pass, In the open waters of Lang Nuan Kou and other places.

Rushan, located on the golden south coast of the Shandong Peninsula at 37° north latitude, has nearly 200 kilometers of coastline and 1.7 million acres of usable sea area with first-class seawater quality. It is one of the world's top oyster producing areas.

Suitable temperature, salinity, fertile water quality and rich basic feed make Rushan oysters have the qualities of large size, smooth meat, delicious taste, and the protein contained in every 100 grams of oyster meat , fat, zinc, iron, manganese, copper and other trace elements are especially comparable to similar products.

Oyster farming

Oyster farming is a specialty industry of Rushan. However, due to the influence of traditional habits, Rushan oyster farming used to follow the path of "spring sowing and autumn harvesting". Due to the few islands off Rushan Bay, strong winds and waves in summer, and the abundance of seawater attachments in summer, the survival rate of oysters is low and the yield is low, which seriously restricts the development of the oyster industry.

In 2000, after technical personnel from the Rushan City Marine Fisheries Bureau returned from field inspections and studies, they jointly developed the "autumn sowing and spring harvesting" oyster farming technology with Ocean University of China. Every September, semi-finished oysters from other places are purchased and cultured, and harvested from November to April of the following year.

This farming model avoids summer storms, shortens the breeding cycle, and greatly improves the survival rate of oysters. Now this breeding model has been fully promoted in Rushan.
