Maoji Experimental Area is located at the intersection of Huaihe River and Xifeihe River. It is a flood storage area along Huaihe River, bordering bagongshan district in the east, Shouxian County in the south, Yingshang County and Fengtai County in the west and north. This area is 15.5km long from north to south and 18.5km wide from east to west, with an area of about 20 1 km2. Maoji experimental area belongs to the North China stratigraphic area, and the sub-ancient strata are covered with deep Quaternary strata with deep soil layers.

The terrain of maoji experimental area inclines from northwest to southeast, with an altitude of 25- 19 meters. In the flood discharge area of Dongfeng Lake in the area, due to the interactive deposition of rivers in different periods, as well as the role of undercutting and redeposition, the terrain is slightly undulating; The floodplain is asymmetrically distributed along the river channel, narrow in the east and wide in the west, with a height difference of 1 to 3 meters; Along the Xifeihe River, due to the accumulation of ancient river sediments and modern Yellow River sediments, an interriver plain was formed. The biological resources in maoji experimental area are mainly distributed in Jiaogang Lake wetland, among which there are more than 200 species of aquatic animals and plants.

The plants in maoji experimental area mainly include Sophora japonica, poplar, melia azedarach, elm, paulownia, pine, Taxodium ascendens, Platycladus orientalis, lotus root, Euryale euryales, duckweed and purple duckweed. Animals mainly include geese, herons, sparrows, quails, kingfishers, eagles, shrimps, spotted catfish and so on. In addition to the water passing through the Huaihe River, there are water resources such as lakes and ponds in maoji Experimental Area, with a total storage capacity of 2 1 10,000 square meters.
