Sanlitun is located in the central and western part of Chaoyang District, Beijing.

It starts from Sanlitun Road in the east, Xindong Road in the west, adjacent to the No. 2 Trolleybus Factory in the north, and reaches Workers' Stadium North Road in the south. It is named because it is three miles away from the inner city. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it belonged to Daxing County, Shuntian Prefecture. As a place name, it generally refers to the area surrounded by Zuojiazhuang, Chaowai Street, Hujialou and Maizidian.

The North Embassy District was built in the area in 1962, and a diplomatic apartment complex was built in the 1960s and 1970s. The Sanlitun area has gradually developed into an important community where diplomats stationed in China live, shop and engage in foreign affairs activities.
