Designer's puzzle: I have been designing for five or six years, but suddenly I find that I can't design. What should I do?
designers are confused at every stage, including designers who have been working for five years. A designer asked me, "I can't design for five years, and I can't imitate it", so I wrote an article to solve the problem for more designers with the same problem.
I've been through your stage, too, and I found that I can't do design, and I doubt that I'm suitable for it.
At this time, I need to give myself a psychological hint and keep saying to myself, "I can design well because I have done too little".
Psychological suggestion is amazing. When you say that I can't do it every time, you really can't do it, and you really can't do it well. Many times we scare ourselves off, not the thing itself.
We should hint in a positive way, and hint in a positive way. For example, I told myself that I can do a good job in design, but I only need less actual combat time and more actual combat time. With such a hint, you won't feel anxious because you can't design.
share some insights from my study of design
Is it true that a lot of imitation is needed at the beginning of design?
You only listened to the first half of the sentence, and the second half was to imitate the excellent landing project.
in other words, designers should choose "excellent design and landing projects" when imitating works.
Why do you want to imitate excellent works? The highest level of works you can produce is the level of the best works you have ever seen.
What you imitate is the level of a certain network work, then your aesthetics will stay at this stage. If you imitate the works of the Great God, then your aesthetics will be the height of the Great God.
When designing, we should be low-minded, "vision should be higher than design ability", and aesthetics and vision must be higher than design ability, no matter what stage.
Why is it a landing project? This question is ignored by many designers. Whether looking at works or imitating works, it is best to find works of landing projects.
Because many works are beautiful and artistic, but they are not landing projects, the design ultimately needs to go through Party A and be tested by the market. If you often imitate such works, your style and aesthetics will be inclined to such works, your design will deviate from the market, and your works will have no commercial value.
let's talk about the reason why we can't design after five years of design. This problem is very common, and you are not alone.
I have summed up five reasons for not being able to design after five years of design.
The first reason is that learning is too complicated, and you spend your experience and time learning new skills. You know a little about each skill, but you are not good at it, so it is normal for you to be an all-around novice and not be able to design.
the second reason: I haven't studied and improved for five years, and I am satisfied with the status quo with a relatively acceptable salary. It took a few years to find out that I could do nothing when I wanted to change jobs.
The third reason: I have no perseverance, I can't persist in learning, and I make up my mind to study every time, but I persist for a few days and then give up. This is repeated, just like many designers want to read books, but they haven't finished reading a book in five years, saying that they can't draw a picture completely in five years.
Without perseverance, you can't learn design well. Learning design must be the same as learning for a period of time, and you should stick to learning well and change to something else.
the fourth reason: learn what you see? Too eager to learn, just learning without practicing, learned a lot of things, and can't design.
the fifth reason: I don't know what I want without clear positioning. I have been looking for what I want for five years, but I can't find what I like.
How can I find what I like? It's actually not easy to say. Let me say one thing: I like it only after I am good at it.
Many designers think they like it at first, but they don't like it when they do it, so you will fall in love with it only if you are good at it first. The initial love may be a whim.
It's like when you are studying, you are partial to subjects, and you like them very much and you hate them very much, but do you really dislike them? You don't like it because you are not good at it.
The above five reasons are some common reasons that I have summarized. Let's see what our problems are, and we must know what our problems are before we can change them.
This article was written by me before. For those who can't find the direction, you can have a look. To be an excellent designer, you must know 4611 words of knowledge (from thinking to cognition)
After working for five years, I think you have tried all kinds of designs yourself and know what you are good at? What do you like?
What you need to do now is to give up some dispensable skills. Those skills that will not be used for a year and a half will be given up decisively, and it is still practical to give up and use them in skill selection.
Learning too much is not a good thing, but a hindrance. At this time, you need to get rid of its chaff and keep its essence. It is very unwise to spend a month learning a skill that is only used once a year.
For example, when many designers learn PS, they will learn all the functions and commands. Is it necessary?
There is no need. There are no more than ten common functions in design, and different types of designs have different common functions. For example, LOGO designers often use tools such as adjusting nodes, adjusting colors and shapes, while retouchers often use tools such as color matching, gradation and curve.
You see, PS is the same. Different designers often use different tools. It's really unnecessary for you to learn all the commands. In fact, if you use more commands that you haven't learned, you will.
There must be a choice between the command to learn a piece of software, the learning skills, the brushing of mobile phones and chatting, and time is wasted by these dispensable things.
Have you ever thought about a question in five years? How much time did you spend studying? Did you spend one year?
at present, you need to give up some skills, choose a main skill, study deeply and study deeply, such as LOGO design. On the surface, it is just drawing a figure, which is the superficial skill that many designers learn.
After going deeper, you will find that LOGO is a brand, a symbol bearing the enterprise/brand, and a visual system. The standard of good or bad LOGO is not beauty or ugliness, but whether it can be remembered, whether it can be applied, whether the logo is not in line with the market and so on.
if every skill you learn is superficial, you can't design well and you can't design well.
what you have learned should focus on your main skills, such as LOGO design, learning font design, VI design and cartoon IP design, all of which are aimed at better LOGO design. If you study e-commerce design at this time, it will go astray and return to the initial unfocused, chaotic and blind learning. In the next five years, you will still ask, why can't I design?
The best way for a designer to break through in five years is to "focus" and become a great god in one field, instead of being an all-around rookie, he should be a great god with specialization.
a very simple truth, even if you just design good food posters, you are a great god in the field of food poster design. What can you do? You are still a rookie.
Speaking of omnipotence and specialization, I'm going to say a little more.
Many designers are confused. If I have a single skill, no one wants to find a job. So I can only learn many skills.
This problem is inherently contradictory. Successful people insist on doing one thing, but the market needs generalists. Most people will choose to cater to the market and live after all.
at this time, you need to separate your work from your development direction. What do you mean?
A job needs a generalist. It doesn't mean that you have to know everything at first, but that you will learn more and more slowly during your work. If you read the recruitment information, you have to learn the skills required by the recruitment information, and you will lose.
skills will never be learned, new technologies are constantly developing, and new tools are produced every year. when can you meet the recruitment requirements of the company?
The longer you work, the more skills you will acquire and become a generalist.
Why should the development direction be separated from the work? The work needs many skills, but you don't need them after work. Use your spare time to develop your main skills. When your main skills have been achieved, you have the right to choose.
You can choose companies that only need to do a single design. There are many such companies. Every designer of a good company only needs to design his own professional field, so that you can develop better in the professional field.
it can't meet the needs of the company, and more attention should be paid to self-development. If you can't jump out of this circle, you can only be an all-around rookie.
Whether you spend your spare time or go to work, I want to tell you that you can be a generalist, but you need to spend more time studying the main skills. The main skills should be the same as eating every day, and the auxiliary skills can be dispensed with.
To sum up, break through at one point first, and let yourself have a point to shine first. This light will shine on other aspects of you, and other aspects will become excellent. Why do excellent people get better and better, and excellent people only succeed in one thing at first?
The way for designers to get out of confusion in five years is to "focus" and find a point to break through.
