Guanqian Street "Bai Xiang (playing) Guanqian Street" has been a leisure activity that Suzhou citizens talk about for a long time.
One of the moving things about Guanqian is that the densely populated famous shops on both sides of the street have adapted to people's shopping needs earlier. Many of these shops have a history of more than a hundred years, and just hearing their name is enough to associate them with their specialty products and characteristics. Starting from the Jufang Bridge in Guandong, the first thing that catches the eye is Lu Gaojian Butcher Shop, which was founded in the second year of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1663). The "Lu Mao Jian Hoof" operated by it is the most famous. It uses "Lake pig" from the Taihu Lake Basin. The skin is thin and the meat is tender, easy to rot when cooked, and the meat tastes fragrant and glutinous. In addition, its honey sauce duck, which is carefully cooked using Suzhou's big, fat and tender Loumen duck, is also well-known in Sioux City.
A few houses away from Guanqian Street, there is a water-milled square brick wall with a height of more than 6 meters, with a row of five bays. It looks quaint and spectacular among the Guanqian buildings. There are brick carvings on the lintel of the Shiku. The two characters "Hengfu" for gold are the famous gold shop Hengfu Silver Building. Founded in the eighth year of Daoguang's reign (1828), the silver shop sells all kinds of gold and silver jewelry and ornaments, including statues of longevity stars, eight immortals and other figures, with various colors and strange and attractive lights. Because its gold source comes from Shanghai HSBC Bank, its quality is high, and its workmanship is exquisite, so it is well-known all over the world. There is a Sheng Chunyang Ham shop at the entrance of Zhusi Lane, formerly known as Juchengxiang Leg Store, which was founded during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. It purchased ham from Jinhua, Dongyang, Yiwu, Rugao and other places. It was strict in purchasing, made small profits but quick turnover, and gradually became a giant in Suzhou's cured salt industry.
Next door to Sheng Chunyang is Cai Zhi Zhai Candy Shop. In the ninth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1870), Songhelou, Guanqian Street, Henan, is the most prestigious time-honored restaurant in Suzhou. It was founded in the second year of Qianlong's reign (1737). It was originally a noodle shop, famous for its braised duck noodles and strong chicken noodles. In the late Qing Dynasty, Subang cuisine was operated, and famous chefs were invited to pay attention to the selection of ingredients, knife skills and heat, and the characteristics of stewing, braising, roasting and simmering were used to make each dish have excellent color, aroma, taste and shape. Its dishes such as squirrel mandarin fish, clear Dayu (shrimp), original shark's fin, steamed pork with lotus leaf powder, snowflake crab bucket, and herring in water are famous far and wide.
The reason why Guanqian is attractive is indeed related to its surrounding environment, especially Eunuch Lane and Beiju, which complement the prosperity of Guanqian. Eunuch Lane is an alley parallel to the south of Guanqian Street. It is known as "Eunuch Lane" because of the concentration of restaurants. In the 1930s, there were restaurants such as Zhengxingguan, Xuangong, Sanwu, Da Xinyang, and Jue Lin Vegetable Food Forest. After liberation, especially after the reform and opening up, the eunuch wine shop business became more and more prosperous, and it was known as the "food street". Deyuelou, Wangsi Restaurant, Shanghai Laozhengxing, Yuan Dachang, Gongdelin and other restaurants stand side by side here. In the evening, various neon lights illuminated the palace, and the alley was bustling with traffic. After the banquet, guests walked through the palace alley and took a leisurely look, and some brought back various items.
