A tree with a height of 20 meters, a diameter at breast height of 80 cm, winter buds about 5 mm long, branchlets grey-brown, stipules oblong, 10-15 mm long, covered with sparse hairs and squamous glands. The leaves are elliptic to oblong, 11-17 cm long and up to 7 cm wide. The top is short to acuminate, and the base is nearly truncate or rounded, or both sides are slightly curved inward and are earlobe-shaped, often with one side tilted. Asymmetrical, the base of the new leaves is often narrow, wedge-pointed and symmetrical on both sides. The back of the leaf is covered with star-like downy hairs or becomes almost hairless due to hair loss; the petiole is 1-2 cm long. The male inflorescence is 10-20 cm long, and the inflorescence axis is hairy; 3-5 flowers are gathered into clusters, and 1-3 (-5) female flowers are well developed and the lower part of the style is hairy. The sharp spines of the mature shell can be long or short, sparse or dense. When dense, they completely cover the outer wall of the shell, and when sparse, the outer wall is visible. The diameter of the shell with spines is 4.5-6.5 cm; the height of the nut is 1.5-3 cm, and the width is 1.8- 3.5 cm. The flowering period is from April to June, and the fruiting period is from August to October.
