Mao Xiaoqing's father, Mao Zelian, was Mao Zedong's ninth cousin, 20 years younger than Mao Zedong.

Born in Shaoshan in 1954, he joined the army at the age of 16 and later entered Guilin Army School to study cable carrier major.

After graduation, he was still a soldier. Neither the unit commander nor his comrades knew that Mao Xiaoqing was Mao Zedong's niece.
