At the end of the Warring States Period, it was once the capital of Chu State.

Chen Sheng and Wu Guang established the Zhang Chu regime here.

Since the Han Dynasty, counties and prefectures have been established with Huaiyang as the center in successive dynasties.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Zhoujiakou was an important hub for material exchange between the northwest and the south of the Yangtze River. It was once known as one of the four major commercial towns in Henan.

In the early Ming Dynasty, it began to develop with the opening of the Shaying River water transport, and the initial market town gradually expanded from the north bank of the Shahe River to the south bank.

In order to meet the needs of merchants from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, a family named Zhou opened the first ferry on Ziwu Street (today's Old Street in Chuanhui District) on the South Bank, and "Zhoujiakou" got its name.

During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, the dredging of the Jialu River was completed, and Zhoujiakou became an important commodity distribution center connecting Jianghuai to the south and Shanxi to the north.

In the early fifty years of the Qing Dynasty, the Jialu River was dredged ten times to ensure smooth river transportation.

During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, the development of Zhoujiakou Town reached its peak, with 16 ferries opened, 116 streets, tens of thousands of permanent residents, and hundreds of thousands of floating population.

In the middle and late Qing Dynasty, sea transport gradually replaced river transport as the main channel for transporting materials between the north and the south.

In 1843, the Yellow River burst in Zhongmou, causing the Jialu River to silt up. The navigation channel of the Jialu River north to Kaifeng was blocked and has never been restored since.

The business in Zhoujiakou Town began to decline.

During the Tongzhi period of Xianfeng, the Nian Army's war spread to Zhoujiakou, and many temple buildings in the town were "burned three times and almost completely destroyed."

Modern History In 1901, the entire Beijing-Hankou Railway was opened to traffic.

Luohe, which is dozens of kilometers west of Zhoukou, has attracted a large number of businessmen and people because it is located along the railway line. Zhoukou has also completely bid farewell to the prosperity of ancient times, when "thousands of houses were lit up with lights and thousands of sails gathered like Hangao".

In 1938, the Yellow River broke its banks at Huayuankou, and the Yellow River, which was in flood season, changed its course and flowed down the Jialu River and Ying River.

The Zhoukou area became the hardest hit area by the yellow flood, which lasted for nine years.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the counties and cities in Zhoukou were successively affiliated to Huaiyang Prefecture, Shangqiu Prefecture and Xuchang Prefecture.

In 1965, Zhoukou District was established (later changed to Zhoukou Area).

In 2000, the Zhoukou area was changed to the prefecture-level Zhoukou City.

Administrative divisions As of January 2014, Zhoukou City has jurisdiction over: 1 municipal district, 8 counties, and 1 county-level city.
