Extended information: The legend of Wangfujing in Beijing: Legend has it that this place was originally the residence of a famous prince. There was a famous well in the prince's residence, and its location was at the north end of the original "People's Daily" building.
At that time, there was an exquisite hexagonal pavilion on the well. The wellhead was a round hole cut out of a large stone. The rim of the well was very high. To the south of the well was the palace courtyard with splendid golden walls, painted pillars and carved beams. The red painted door opened to the south.
So proud.
There are many wells in Beijing.
Since Beijing was a sea in ancient times, it had abundant underground water resources.
But when King Yan was building the city of Beijing, he somehow angered the Dragon King. The Dragon King was angry and took revenge by cutting off the water supply.
It disguised itself as a human and used two water baskets to bring all the water from Beijing to the Black Dragon Pond in the West Mountain.
At that time, there was an extremely brave warrior named Gao Liang, who was ordered by military advisor Liu Bowen to chase the Dragon King. Seeing that the Dragon King was approaching the Black Dragon Pond, Gao Liang suddenly became wise and raised his spear to poke at the left basket of the Dragon King. He only heard "crash"
"With a sound, a basket of water came out, and now the city of Beijing had water to drink.
But the Dragon King took away another basket of water, leaving only one basket of water. Therefore, as long as there is a slight drought, Beijing will suffer from water shortages.
One year, there was a severe drought that had never happened in a century. Almost all the wells in Beijing were dry. The four lakes were dry and only had water at the bottom. The grass in the streets and courtyards was all dead.
People were so thirsty that smoke was rising from their throats.
At this time, only a few wells were still producing water, and Wangfujing was one of them.
Wangfujing not only has water, but the water here is sweet. There is a well nearby called Tianshui Well.
In drought years, water is more valuable than gold. Rich families use cars to transport water to Yuquan Mountain, which is dozens of miles away. Poor families do not have cars to transport water, so they have to carry it on their shoulders, which is very tiring.
Some families survive by collecting muddy water from the bottom of wells. A family only has a small jar of water a day, and each person only has a small bowl of water a day.
But Wangfujing is still producing water at this time, which makes the prince majestic!
He said that this was the great blessing and good fortune of his ancestors. The house and well were on the dragon's veins, and the Dragon King blessed his family with water.
This prince was very vicious. Seeing that everyone had no water to drink, he not only refused to provide water from the well to everyone to survive the famine, but ordered the old gatekeeper to close the well and not allow people to get water.
Fortunately, the old janitor, although he worked as a janitor for the prince, was very kind-hearted. He was very dissatisfied with the prince occupying the well and preventing the poor from living, so he secretly gave people a lot of convenience.
Every morning and evening when the prince and his cronies were sleeping, he would wink and signal to the people who were collecting water outside the entrance of the alley, and everyone would quickly get some water and leave.
The old gatekeeper was also very alert. Once when the prince discovered that someone was fetching water, he angrily called him in for questioning. He smiled and replied: "Yes, prince, I asked someone to fetch some water. I
Guilty. But I’m thinking about the prince! The prince’s family will inevitably hire people to carry grain and rice. If the people nearby are dying of thirst, how can anyone work for the prince’s family? If the prince doesn’t agree, then I will.
Never let anyone take away a drop of water again." The prince heard that his words made some sense, so he was vague and didn't pursue it.
People respected and loved the old man who looked after the well very much. As a result, more and more people came to Wangfujing to collect water. Not only residents in nearby alleys, but also people living far away came here after hearing the news.
From then on, the name of Wangfujing spread far and wide, and people who did not know about the well knew it. From now on, when people mentioned this area, they would use the name Wangfujing to refer to it, such as Wangfujing North, Wangfujing, etc.
Jingnan, Wangfujing East, Wangfujing West, etc.
Later, Dong'an Market moved here and gradually turned into a prosperous commercial district, but people still call it Wangfujing according to the old habit.
In this way, the name Wangfujing has been passed down to this day.
