Dragon Boat Festival delicacies include rice dumplings, salted duck eggs, mung bean cake, five-yellow cake, and oil cake.
1. Zongzi
Eating zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival is a common traditional custom in the north and south of my country. In the north, they mainly eat triangular sweet rice dumplings, which are made with candied dates, jujubes, and bean paste as fillings. The most representative one is Beijing’s candied rice dumplings. In the South, they mainly eat salty rice dumplings, and the fillings are mainly marinated pork belly. In the South, they mainly eat four-cornered rice dumplings, pointed triangular rice dumplings, and square rice dumplings.
2. Salted duck eggs
Also known as green skin, green eggs, pickled duck eggs, they were called salted duck eggs in ancient times and are a special Chinese dish. Salted duck eggs have a long history in China and are deeply loved by the people and are also very popular in the market.
3. Mung bean cake
In many places in our country, besides rice dumplings, mung bean cake plays the leading role on the Dragon Boat Festival. It has the characteristics of regular and neat shape, light yellow color, fine and moist texture, and soft and non-sticky taste. The raw materials for making mung bean cake include mung bean flour, pea flour, brown sugar, osmanthus, etc. It is a good summer snack that clears away heat and detoxifies, protects the liver and nourishes the kidneys.
4. Five Yellow Moons
In the Jiangnan area, there is a saying called Five Yellow Moons. In Jiangsu and Zhejiang areas, five yellows are eaten on the Dragon Boat Festival. Wuhuang refers to rice wine, yellow croaker, cucumber, eel, and duck egg yolk. But Wuhuang is not a specific type. In some places, salted duck eggs are not eaten, but soybeans are eaten.
5. Oil cakes
In addition to eating rice dumplings, you also eat oil cakes on the Dragon Boat Festival. The oil cake is made of hot oiled noodles, stuffed with sugar, cinnamon, rose, walnut kernels, and lard, and deep-fried in an oil pan. The skin is loose and foamy, the filling is sweet, and the appearance is beautiful.
