Review: The so-called sadomasochism should refer to a way of expressing love by hurting the other person, and this kind of hurt is not confined to sexual abuse, but also includes mental torture. Therefore sadomasochistic movies are not equivalent to SM movies. The reason why this movie, shot in 2001, has become the most treasured sadomasochistic movie in our eyes is that it doesn't stay on the superficial performance of some perverted behaviors, but goes deep into the inner world of the heroine. Isabelle Yupel, the famous French movie star, plays the middle-aged woman who longs for love but is afraid of it in a way that is both frightening and compassionate. Region 1 had released single D9 with a commentary track of Isabelle Yupel's choice footage, an interview with the author of the novel, Alfred Jelinlek, and an interview with director Michael Haneke.
2.[Bitter Moon] Bitter Moon (1992)
Review: Roman Polanski's film depicts a loving couple tormenting each other because they can't find the right way to get along. The movie has a somber tone and a slow pace, and the most moving part of the movie is the despair of being extremely sad and not being able to find a way out. It was released on Region 2 DVD in the UK in August 2004.
3.[The Midnight Porter] Special Edition The Night Porter (1974)
Reviewed by Liliana Cavani, a famous Italian female director. A love story between a Jewish girl and a Nazi officer who sexually abuses her in a concentration camp. The movie puts sex above all values, so don't go near it if you can't accept it.Region 1 special edition US 2000 release.
4.[The Story of O] Histoire d'O (1975)
Review: Changed from the famous French sadomasochistic novel The Story of O. O is the name of a girl who, out of love for her lover, accepts him to become a man's slave and suffers from whipping and rape training every day of the arrangement. The treatment of the sexual abuse scenes in the movie is full of literary flavor, which is more acceptable to the general audience. 2002 Region 1 DVD release comes with a commentary track by director Justice Gagin.
5.[Shanghai Inhuman Prostitutes] The Story of O Continued/Fruits of Passion(1981)
Review: Shuji Terayama's adaptation of The Story of O is actually a continuation of the original, with the location shifted to Shanghai, China. What's off-putting about the movie is not so much the sexually abusive scenes as the slow pace and obscure narrative techniques. France released an all-region version on DVD in 2002.
