Pineal gland is an endocrine gland, which is responsible for producing serotonin, melatonin and neurotransmitters that affect sleep cycle and sexual development. The pineal gland is called "the seat of the soul" and is considered as a very deep spiritual center in the brain.
The human pineal gland is a gray-red ovoid body, with a length of (5 ~ 8) mm, a width of (3 ~ 5) mm and a weight of (120 ~ 200) mg, and it reaches its peak at the age of 7~8. The pineal gland is located at the top of the diencephalon, between the habenular commissure and the posterior commissure, in the depression above the tetrad, and at the top of the third ventricle, so it is also called the superior cerebral gland. One end of the pineal gland is connected with the top of the third ventricle through a thin stalk, and the third ventricle protrudes into the stalk to form a pineal recess. The surface of pineal gland is covered with connective tissue capsule extending from the pia mater. The capsule extends into the parenchyma with blood vessels, dividing the parenchyma into many irregular lobules, which are mainly composed of pineal cells, glial cells and nerve fibers.
