Anchovy, Engraulidae ? Mouth large, inferior. Mouth slit inclined. Posterior extension of maxilla reaches or extends beyond the base of pectoral fins. Lower margin serrulate. Both jaws with a line of fluffy teeth, plow bone and palatine bone with tiny teeth. Body prolonged, very laterally compressed, high anteriorly, gradually lowered posteriorly, spikelike. Dorsal fin base convex anteriorly, sloping downward toward head and tail. Dorsal margin wider than ventral margin, ventral margin broadly arcuate and narrow. Head slightly small and laterally compressed, snout pointed. Mouth large, inferior, slightly obliquely cleft. Maxilla longer than mandible, posterior margin of maxilla exceeding gill aperture. The teeth of both jaws are small. Pectoral fins small, laterally inferior, surmounted by six long filamentous free fins, tips reaching or slightly exceeding the beginning of the anal fin. Ventral fin short, starting below beginning of dorsal fin. The anal fin is very long basally, beginning at the tip of the pectoral fin or slightly anteriorly and inferiorly, with the posterior margin attached to the caudal fin, within 90 fin rays. The caudal fin is short and has no lateral line on it. Body grayish yellow dorsally, silvery white laterally and ventrally. Dorsal, anal and caudal fins light gray, pectoral and ventral fins white. Body length is usually 15-20 centimeters.
