Persimmon also has anti-tumor and multidrug resistance reversal effects. Kawase et al. (2003) studied cytotoxicity, reversal of multidrug resistance, anti-HIV activity and anti-Helicobacter pylori activity by using persimmon peel components. Acetone extract fragments (A4, A5) have strong toxic effects on tongue squamous cell carcinoma HSC-2 (human submandibular gland tumor cells) and submandibular gland tumor cells (HSG), with IC50 of 2 1 ~ 59 μ g/ml. However, cytotoxicity is independent of the concentration of the fragment. 70% methanol persimmon extract has an effective ability to scavenge oxygen free radicals. Anti-HIV activity and anti-Helicobacter pylori activity have little effect. M2 and M3 components extracted by methanol showed obvious reversal of multidrug resistance. These results show that persimmon peel extract has potential therapeutic value in anti-tumor and reversing multidrug resistance.
